Registering Done Easier

An integrated digital platform designed to empower U.S. citizens with a streamlined and accessible means to register to vote, ensuring their active participation in the democratic process.

Project Overview

The Problem

I embarked on a mission to address critical challenges that included sluggish processes and intricate registration steps, all with the overarching goal of simplifying and expediting the user registration experience.

The Goal

The primary objective of this project was to establish a user-friendly and efficient platform for voter registration, with the ultimate aim of fostering greater civic engagement by simplifying and motivating the registration process.

The Product

The Registering Tool is purpose-built to cater to eligible U.S. citizens, streamlining the voter registration process for enhanced convenience and efficiency.

My Role

As a UX Designer, I had the distinct privilege of conceptualizing and bringing to fruition a transformative tool for the betterment of society, illustrating my ability to see a project through from its inception to its tangible realization.

Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs

Project Duration

June 2022 - June 2022

Understanding the user

I conducted a comprehensive research initiative encompassing both online and in-person interviews, complemented by the creation of empathy maps, to gain a profound understanding of users' needs, frustrations, and emotions. Through this research, the primary user demographic identified consisted of U.S. citizens.

My interview approach involved engaging individuals in discussions about their experiences with the voter registration process. I probed for insights into the challenges they encountered, their desires for improvements, and their emotional responses to the process. While I initially hypothesized that the process might be sluggish and demotivating, the user group indeed confirmed these assumptions. However, my research also uncovered a broader spectrum of issues, including various challenges and personal interests that sometimes hindered their ability to complete the registration process effectively.

Persona and problem statement

Derrick, a Graphic Designer, is in search of a swift and intuitive voter registration application, essential for him to efficiently exercise his right to vote.

Starting the design

The sitemap intricately maps out the structural and operational framework of the website, defining its functionality and user flow in a meticulously sequential manner.

Paper wireframes

Deliberate efforts were invested in the meticulous sketching of screen designs on paper, ensuring that the chosen elements for the digital wireframe were thoughtfully tailored to effectively address user pain points. Central to this process was a steadfast commitment to prioritizing a seamless and efficient navigation experience within the tool.

Stars were used to mark the elements of each sketch that would be used in digital wireframes

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base the screen designs on feedback from the user research

Usability study findings

To prepare for testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype which you can view here I used this prototype to conduct an unmoderated usability study with 5 participants. Here are the main findings uncovered by the usability study:

User feedback highlights the desire for image enhancements to elevate the overall aesthetics and visual appeal of the app.

2. Color

User feedback highlighted a strong preference for color to enhance visual appeal and engagement.

3. Edit

User demand centers around the need for a flexible interface that empowers them to modify their personal information, including their name and license details.

Mock ups

Incorporating insights gleaned from a rigorous usability study, I undertook a series of strategic enhancements to elevate the overall aesthetic and functionality of the site. Notably, I introduced a user-friendly feature enabling profile customization, allowing users the flexibility to edit critical details such as their name, address, and license information seamlessly, thereby simplifying their interaction with the platform.

To enhance the user registration experience, I implemented an intuitive map feature, providing voters with clear and precise directions to their designated polling locations.

Accessibility considerations

Users are provided with the convenient option to log in using three prominent social media platforms.

2. Color

The color palette is readily visible.

3. Process

We've streamlined the voter registration process to enhance user convenience.

Takeaways

Impact

Simplifying the voter registration process has the potential to serve as a powerful catalyst for higher voter turnout, thus contributing to an increase in civic participation across the United States.

What i learned

While collaborating on the development of the Registration tool, I gained profound insights into the significance of initial design concepts as the foundation for a larger vision. This perspective was further enriched by the valuable contributions of usability studies and user feedback, which played a pivotal role in shaping and refining both the app and website.

Next steps

1.Continue to work on the site and app

2. Possibly talk to an engineer

3. Update any necessary changes to the app and site
